The Retreat

 

The Retreat is accessible by 4WD vehicle only in a secluded haven nestled amongst the mountains in the Avoca Valley. It has most of the comforts of home amidst beautiful scenery and tranquil surroundings for your to relax and enjoy. Take a short walk to nearby Lake Lillian or cross the river to visit the pinnacles an unusual geological formation.

The Retreat originally established by the New Zealand Forest Service to accommodate deer cullers and scientists, was taken over by Glenthorne in 1998. Following renovations it now provides a comfortable refuge for families and groups who appreciate the peace and solitude of the area.

  • Sleeps between 18 – 22 people
  • 3 bedrooms in main building with 2 more buildings situated outside
  • Permanently fitted gas for all hot water, some cooking and some lighting
  • Log burner and wood supplied (chop your own as required)
  • Fully equipped for self catering
  • No fridge/freezer but a food safe for storage of food
  • 1 showers and 2 toilets
  • Bring own bedding, towels, toiletry items and food
  • Pillows and cases are provided

The Retreat comprises of one large lounge/dining room with a log burner and an open plan kitchen. This room also has two fold our settee couches for extra beds if required and two large kitchen tables for dining.

Main Building – Bed Configuration

Room 1 – One bunk bed

Room 2 – Two bunk beds

Room 3 – One bunk bed + one single bed

Honeymoon Suite – One Double bed (nearby outside)

Bunk House – Sleeps 7 (approx. 100 metres from the main building)

Price:

$25 per person per night (own bedding & towels)

Childrens price: 0-3 years free, 4-12 years 1/2 price

Conditions: A minimum amount of $75 per night is required to book the retreat. No matter what size group you have you would have exclusive use of this building.

Cancellation Policy – If booking is cancelled within 30 days of your arrival a $50 charge will apply unless accommodation is re booked for an alternative date.  If you fail to arrive for your booking the entire amount of your stay will apply.

  • Glenthorne Station is a working station we do not allow dogs on the property
  • Insect repellent is essential in the summer months
  • Because of the remote nature of the retreat it would be best to fuel up your vehicle before coming or bring an extra container
  • Nearest petrol station Windwhistle (not open weekends) and Springfield
  • Nearest shops Darfield or Methven
  • No cell phone coverage
